How does the software determine the WEB URL from the FTP information.
I would like to *tell* the software what URL to submit to the search engines.
Perhaps I missed this setting or it just knows somehow?

Thanks for your help.

When you create a profile, that's the site that is getting spidered and you're building sitemap files for. When you enter in the FTP information, you could enter a Remote Path if you have multiple websites on the server.
If you haven't already, please read the Quick Start Manual. It explains everything.

Does this assume then that the sitemaps should always be placed in the root path of the website?

Yes! This is a requirement by Google. You don't have a choice.
