I generated sitemaps for a site of our and used the ftp credentials. The log messages seem to indicate that everything was successful, as in sitemaps created successfully, notified successfully, ftpd successfully. But I don't see any sitemaps in our site, though the path was given. Do sitemaps get sent to the search engine, or do they get uploaded to our site and the search engine is just notified? Any idea why I'm getting a confirmation but not seeing the files?

OK further research - found the sitemaps one level up. So in preferences the ftp host is mydomain.com and the ftp remote path is /public_html/public . Our default page is index.shtml in the folder public. The sitemaps were placed in the public_html folder. Is that correct, or should they be at the same level as the index.shtml?

It is safest to put the sitemap files in the root folder (where your index.shtml is located).
